  • Former UFC Lightweight Champion Sean "Muscle Shark" Sherk will make an appearance at AFC 79 January 12 at Sullivan Arena.  He will also conduct a seminar January 13, 6-9pm, at Anchorage Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (113 W Northern Lights Blvd).   The seminar fee is $30 in advance or $50 at the door, sign up at ABJJ. 

 

  • Doug Evans defeated Tristan Johnson by RNC in the third at W-1 MMA in Nova Scotia October 23. 

 

  • In his second UFC appearance, Julio Paulino lost by unanimous decision to TJ Grant at UFC 119 September 25 in Indianapolis.

 

  • After a five-round battle at Sharkfight 13, Ronnie Mann defeated Doug Evans by split decision September 11 in Amarillo. 

 

  • UFC Welterweight Mike "Quick" Swick will be at AFC 75 to meet fans September 15 at Sullivan Arena.  Discount tickets are available at Anchorage Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

 

  • Doug Evans will defend his Sharkfight featherweight title September 11 in Amarillo.  Evans (10-6) will face British fighter Ronnie Mann (17-2-1) on a card stacked with fellow UFC vets, like Keith Jardine and Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou.  Sherdog will carry a live stream of the fights starting at 8pm ET. 

 

  • Welterweight Mike Pierce defeated Julio Paulino at UFC on Versus 1 in Colorado March 21 with a unanimous decision(30-27 from all three judges).   

 

  • Doug Evans successfully defended his featherweight (145lb) title at Sharkfights 9 March 20 in Amarillo.  The ABJJ/Wolfpack fighter finished his opponent Dustin Phillips with a first round heel hook. 

 

  • At X-1 World Events in Honolulu March 20, Richie Whitson lost his lightweight belt to Harris Sarmiento after a five-round bout that ended in a split decision.

 

  • Gracie Barra Alaska fighters went 1-1 at Xtreme Kombat League "Evolution 1" March 20 in Detroit.   Ricky Shivers earned the title of XKL Light Heavyweight Champion when he defeated Eric Smith with a rear naked choke in the fourth round. In a 225 pound bout, Ricco Rodriguez defeated Brian Ryan with a ground and poundflurry in round two.

 

  • Bantamweight Scott Jorgensen defeated Chad George at WEC 47 March 6 in Columbus, Ohio.  The first round guillotine submission win improves Jorgensens WEC record to 5-2, and his overall record to 9-3.

 

  • For the first time ever, HDNet's well known MMA news show "Inside MMA" was in Anchorage to cover AFC 68. 

 

  •  In his fifth UFC appearance, Justin Buchholz lost to Mac Danzig by decision February 6 at UFC 109 in Las Vegas.

 

  •   Anchorage fighter Doug Evans was scheduled to face Brazilian Marcelo Giudici in a 145-pound match October 24 in Edmonton, Canada at Aggression MMA.  The fight was cancelled minutes before the show started after 42-year-old Guidici did not pass an EKG test at the arena.
  • At WEC 43 in San Antonio October 10, Scott Jorgenson defeated Noah Thomas in the first round of their 135-pound bout when the ref stopped the fight due to a cut.

 

  • Alaska grown Richie Whitson defeated Leaonardo Soares by unanimous decision Respect in the Cage September 20 in California. 

 

  • Jeremy Stevens defeated Justin Buchholz at Ultimate Fight Night 19 September 16 in Oklahoma City.  The fight was stopped in the first round after Stevens opened a cut on Buchholz' forehead.

 

  • Anchorage middleweight fighter Julio Paulino defeated UFC Veteran Terry Martin in a third round knockout at Arena Rumble September 12 in Spokane, Washington. 

 

  • Former AFC Middleweight Champion Ricky Shivers (7-4-1), who was only recently added to the card, was defeated by Texas fighter Marcus Sursa (10-4) by a triangle in the second round of their light heavyweight bout. Click here to watch Inside MMA coverage of the event.
  • Anchorage fighter Dave Mazany (6-3) was defeated by Canadian welterweight Ryan "The Real Deal" Ford at The Fight Club 7 in Edmonton on May 30.  Ford(9-2) went for a quick win, defeating Mazany with strikes 28 seconds into round one.

 

  • Justin Buchholz was defeated by Terry Etim at UFC 99 June 13 in Germany.  Etim submitted Buchholz in the second round with a choke.  This was Buchholz third UFC fight.  

 

  • Scott Jorgensen defeated Albuquerque fighter Frank Gomez with a first round guillotine at WEC 38 January 25 in San Diego.  This win improves Jorgenson's WEC record to 2-1 and his overall record to 6-2.
  • AFC veteran Josh Ofiu defeated Hawaiian heavyweight fighter Auggie Padeken at "Hazardous Warfare" January 3 in Lahaina, Maui.  Ofiu, who is 4-1 in the AFC, finished Padeken by strikes in the first round. 

 

  • In his Palace Fighting Championship debut November 20, former AFC Lightweight Champ Scott McAfee (6-1) defeated Jason Drake with a first round TKO.
  • Alaska Wolfpack/ ABJJ fighter Doug Evans defeated bantamweight fighter Jared Lopez October 24 at Sharkfight 1 in Texas.  Evans submitted Lopez by armbar less than a minute into the first round.

 

  • Current ICON Middleweight Champion Kala Kalohe Hose defeated Fairbanks fighter Rolando Dominique with a second round TKO August 2 at ICON Sport "Hard Times" in Honolulu.   Even though Hose is the current champ, it was a non-title fight and the bout was at a catch weight of 180 pounds.

 

  • Bantamweight Scott Jorgensen (4-1) made a successful second appearance in the WEC cage August 3 when he faced Kenji Osawa (13-7-1) in Las Vegas.  Former state champion wrestler Jorgensen defeated Osawa by unanimous decision.  

 

  • In Hawaii, Sitka fighter Richie Whitson (4-0) earned the title of Lightweight World Champion at X-1 World Events: Legends May 16.  Whitson defeated Ray Cooper (14-9) with a first round knockout.    

 

  • Former Alaska Fighting Championship Lightweight Champion Justin Buchholz (8-2) defeated Corey Hill (2-1)  with a second round rear naked choke at UFC 86 July 5 in Las Vegas.

 

  • April 4, 2008 kicked off a weekend of defeat for Alaska fighters in the lower 48.   In New Jersey Friday night, Alaska grown Shad Lierly (2-2) hoped to become the new IFL 145-pound champ, but instead suffered a first round knockout at the hands of the current champ Wagnney Fabiano. Saturday brought two more defeats for the state. In his EliteXC debut, Anchorage fighter Doug Evans (6-3) lost to Californian Bao Quach (13-8) by knockout at the Table Mountain Casino in Friant, California.  In Reno, Fairbanks fighter David Knight lost to Washington fighter Lyle Beerbohm by choke in the first round of his Xtreme Caged Combat 6 fight.

 

  • In California, Anchorage middleweight fighter Ricky Shivers was defeated by Gladiator Challenge veteran Jaime Jara (17-5) by submission (round one) in Rebel Fighters: Warriors Collide March 22.
